Why Did I Write an Urban Fantasy Series
Paranormal Protection Society, or PPS for short, is a book series that came to me one night sitting in my living room. The urge to write was creeping back into my finger tips and I was thinking about the topic(s) I would like to write about.

Those who know me understand how much I love mecha (giant fighty robots from series like Robotech or Voltron) and would know I wrote a role playing game called Mecha. Because of that, it was only natural that my brain would tell me to write Paranormal Protection Society, an urban fantasy series about a werewolf who keeps other paranormals safe. I mean, there’s definitely a very close tie between giant robots and heroic werewolves, right?
The Two Ideas Behind the Paranormal Protection Society
Anyway, the Paranormal Protection Society started off with two simple ideas. One, there are books where werewolves and vampires are good. Two, there are books about humans who hunt evil vampires and werewolves. I wanted to take the next step and write about vampires and werewolves who protect
other vampires and werewolves from the humans who would hurt them.
Maybe the next step is to write about the vampires and werewolves who fight the vampires and
werewolves who protect the vampires and werewolves from the humans who would hurt them. Maybe that’s too meta?
After I solidified around that idea, the Paranormal Protection Society series added some current themes pulled from today. For instance, Mark Strong is based off a local politician whose politics I find distasteful. In fact, his story line is so contemporary that I had to write a new Paranormal Protection
Society Book 5 because some of the things that happen in (what will now be) Book 6 were a little too
close to things happening this election season.
The Real Goal of the Paranormal Protection Society Series
Most importantly, though, I want the PPS series to be about laughter and hope. Just a like a mermaid living in Kansas City, I hope those who feel like they’re on the outside find the promise of community in Paranormal Protection Society. I want these books to make you laugh, but I really want them to give you encouragement to find your own PPS. Even if the Paranormal Protection Society isn’t real, everyone has a big dumb werewolf. Sometimes you just have to find them.
